I’m actually a moderate Democrat who supports Israel, and is absolutely appalled by the lack of fairness shown towards a country that fell prey to such a horrific act of terrorism and barbarism at the hands of Hamas. I also believe that the killing of the Palestinian population in Gaza is simply tragic, and I read the stories and cannot imagine the human suffering. I say this because there is a nuanced position that allows one to support both sides. Having said all of that, what this is has nothing to do with “nuance”. It’s a disingenuous and horrifying display of lying,gaslighting, and political pandering. I hope her voters remember that she did this. New Rochelle deserves a lot better.
Too many people do not understand the very complicated history of the region nor do they understand the very complex political system within the nation of Israel. As imperfect of a democracy as Israel is (and I say that as an American living under a significantly flawed democracy), they have managed, for over 75 years, to maintain one of the only nations in the Middle East that has free and fair elections, a strong political left, a transparent court system and a system of checks and balances. 20% of the Israeli population speaks fluent Arabic and all signs in Israel are in Hebrew and Arabic. And while it is true that both Arab and Christian populations in Israel face discrimination, especially by the Ultra Orthodox, they enjoy equal right, equal protection and equal access under law. Like us, Israeli has a lot of work to do to improve it’s democracy, but people who haven’t been there, who don’t know the history and don’t understand the political landscape should take the time to learn before engaging in anti-Israel hatred. The path forward will hopefully be a two-state solution that allows peace and prosperity for the Palestinian people, and peace and security for Israel. And yes, Robert, I will take your advice and watch the feces-flinging cage match from my TV, popcorn popped and ready. :)
